Wir freuen uns, mit Frau Prof. Friederike Moltmann eine international bekannte Philosophin und Linguistin und eine der führenden Forscherinnen im Bereich der Ontologie Natürlicher Sprache für einen Lehrauftrag gewonnen zu haben.  Prof. Moltmann ist Forschungsleiterin am French Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Paris und  Gastwissenschaftlerin an der New York University. Ihre bahnbrechende Arbeit schlägt eine Brücke zwischen der traditionellen philosophischen Sicht auf Sprache und der empirischen Annäherung an Sprache, wie sie in der Linguistik etabliert ist. Der innovative Kern ihrer wegweisenden Arbeit ist die Erkenntnis, dass die dem Gebrauch von natürlicher Sprache zugrunde liegenden metaphysischen Voraussetzungen sehr viel subtiler und komplexer sind, als die Philosophie es üblicherweise annimmt.

Natural Language Ontology 

General description

Ontology concerns itself with what categories of entities there are, what characterizes them and how they relate to each other. There is a close connection between language and ontology. In particular, singular terms in natural language appear to stand for objects and the predicates applicable to them appear to reflect the characteristic properties of those objects. An important philosophical project thus is to ‘uncover’ the ontology reflected in natural language. The first part of this seminar will pursue a range of topics within such a particularly strict ‘descriptive metaphysics, making use of methods of contemporary linguistic semantics.  The second part will explore an ontology of attitudinal and modal objects that is particularly well-reflected in natural language, for the semantics of attitude reports, truth predicates, and modal sentences.
