abstract

Bayesian confirmation theory is beset by a variety of deep problems that have to do with failures of relevance. Two prominent examples are "tacking by conjunction" and "tacking by disjunction". In this talk I develop a general conception of relevance, and based on it a conception of content that is based on the decomposition of a proposition in its relevant content elements. I apply these conceptions in order to obtain a notion of 'genuine confirmation' that can solve the mentioned problems of Bayesian confirmation theory.
