Abstract

In this paper I will discuss certain Bayesian arguments in favor of scientific realism. I will show that they are flawed and I will present two Bayesian arguments that speak in favor of a sceptical attitude towards scientific realism.

Next I discuss certain conditions under which the succes-to-truth inference seems to be plausible. My starting point is Worrall's account of confirmation by use-novel evidence. However, for its validation one needs an additional 'a priori' principle of rational inference. In the last part I will discuss an optimality justification for the inference from strong empirial success to truth.
